Our Achievements

This year’s results were cause for celebration and we couldn’t be prouder of how well our students have done. The exceptional results are the icing on the cake for the College, after being graded as Ofsted Outstanding once again in February 2023.

Results were strong across the board, with 72% of students achieving A*-B at advanced level. This means that 7 out of 10 Newman students achieved A*-B in their Level 3 studies with us, whilst the national picture shows that the average grades for all A-Levels at A*-C is 75.4%. Our results also show that we have smashed the national average with our students achieving a staggering 90% A*-C. We are also delighted with the results for our Science and Maths subjects, in particular Maths, where 88% of our A-Level Maths students achieved grades A*-B compared to 62% nationally.

In reality, what this means is that if you choose Cardinal Newman for your post 16 education, your chances of success are fantastic. It’s important to us that our students feel happy, supported and are enjoying their studies. If they are happy and enjoying their work, they will achieve much better grades as a result.

It is this approach that the College lives by, with a whole range of additional opportunities available to our students. This includes a fantastic pastoral programme, delivered by our Achievement Tutors, the HE* Programme, designed to stretch and challenge our most able students and help them achieve their aspirations. We also offer an extensive enrichment programme including trips and visits both in the UK and abroad, which allows our students to enhance their classroom experiences with engaging activities whilst seeing the world. We also have a fantastic range of support systems in place, from our counselling team to the Equality and Diversity team and Health and Wellbeing team, all of whom are in place to ensure students have the skills they need to look after their well-being not just whilst they are at Newman, but for their whole lives.

Speaking about the latest results, Principal Nick Burnham said:

“This years’ results are fantastic and complete a brilliant year for the college following our Ofsted Outstanding judgment. I am so proud of how well our students have done. These results, as ever, are a testament to the hard work that they put into their studies, as well as the dedication of our unbelievably talented staff.”

According to The Times league tables, which were released in the summer of 2023, Cardinal Newman College was placed as the Highest Performing College in the North West and the third Highest Nationally.

The league tables, which were based on the results achieved by our students in summer 2023, prove that once again Cardinal Newman is the College of choice for post 16.

Percentage of Students Achieving A*-B Grades
Woodhouse College, Barnet 76.2
Brighton, Hove & Sussex Sixth Form College 68.7
Cardinal Newman College 66.4
Carmel College 66.4

Students at Newman not only achieve outstanding grades, but also make exceptional progress during their time with us. Value Added is arguably the most important measure as this compares the GCSE scores with A-Level scores and measures the distance travelled during a student’s time at sixth form. On this measure, we are placed as the eighth highest nationally.

We are extremely proud of all of the achievements shown by these measures, as it highlights that our students make the best progress, so no matter what grades a student arrives with, they will flourish at Cardinal Newman.
