What is GCSE English Resit?
Eduqas GCSE English Language is designed to develop your ability to communicate clearly, effectively, and creatively in both written and spoken formats. The course encourages students to become critical readers of a wide range of texts, including fiction and non-fiction, developing analytical skills alongside an appreciation for language. You’ll explore how writers use language and structure to achieve effects, and how context influences meaning. Through a variety of writing tasks, you’ll craft your own narratives, argue and persuade, and reflect on different audiences and purposes.
Additionally, the course includes opportunities to present and discuss ideas verbally, preparing you for real-world communication.
The course focuses on improving your reading, writing, and communication skills through a mix of modern and historical texts. You’ll also practise writing for different purposes and complete a spoken language assessment. The Eduqas GCSE English Language is split into two main components:
• Component 1: 20th Century Literature Reading and Creative Prose Writing
This unit includes reading and analysing a piece of 20th-century literature (e.g., an extract from a novel), followed by writing your own piece of imaginative prose.
• Component 2: 19th and 21st Century Non-Fiction Reading and Transactional/Persuasive Writing
Students will compare and contrast two non-fiction texts from different time periods and then write for a real-life purpose, such as arguing a viewpoint, writing a speech, or crafting a letter.
• Spoken Language Assessment (Non-exam assessment)
Students are required to deliver a presentation or speech, responding to questions and feedback. Though it doesn’t contribute to the final GCSE grade, it is assessed and awarded a separate endorsement. Spoken Language endorsements can be carried forward from previous study.
No specific books are required in advance, as texts are provided in the exams.
After achieving a GCSE in English Language, students are well-prepared to pursue:
• Vocational pathways including BTECs or T-Levels where English proficiency is crucial
• It is also a vital qualification for most university courses, apprenticeships, and employment, making it a foundational stepping stone for almost any career path.
The GCSE English Language Resit is assessed by Eduqas (WJEC).
