Year 12, Geography student selected for Field Trip with the Royal Geographic Society Leading and Learning Summer School

Year 12 student, Martha Holland, previously from Wycliffe Independent Christian School in the South Wales Valleys, has successfully been selected for a prestigious place with the Royal Geographic Society Leading and Learning Summer School which will take place for a week in August.

Martha was one of a select few of geography students, at the end of their first year of AS studies, to be chosen for the field trip. She had to complete a detailed application along with a reference about her suitability for the course from her tutor, Mandy Ingham.

The week long course will be based at the Cranedale Centre, North Yorkshire where the group will investigate coastal geomorphology, moorland slopes, soils & vegetation. They will use Geographic Information Systems including ArcGIS, analysing glacial sediment & investigating coastal management on the Holderness Coast, urban processes & group investigations.

β€œI heard about the summer school through the Royal Geographical Society website on the student activities/courses section. This was suggested to me by Mandy when I was asking about possible geography-related summer activities. I am most looking forward to the coastal management section and the coastal geomorphology as I am very interested in Physical Geography and hope to study it at university.”

The intention of the course is to improve geographical skills, knowledge and understanding and give the opportunity to see real-life case studies and try different fieldwork techniques. It also aims to build confidence, independence, initiative, teamwork and leadership skills.

Mandy was really pleased to hear that Martha was successful, β€œThis is an excellent opportunity for Martha who wants to study Geography at university. It is an all-expenses paid trip to undertake fieldwork in exciting areas of Geography, such as coastal retreat on the Holderness coast. It is a brilliant opportunity and well done to Martha for her successful application.”
