At Cardinal Newman ITT Hub, we are passionate about inspiring young adults to learn in an environment that fosters progress and challenges them to invest in their academic and personal futures. Our aim is to provide Teacher training at Cardinal Newman College, as a regional hub for Xavier Teach SouthEast.  

Cardinal Newman ITT Hub facilitates weekly General Professional Studies and subject specific training. 

We provide a unique Sixth Form experience to inspire the next generation and help to equip young people with the appropriate skills, qualifications and attributes to positively contribute to society. Apprentices will have secondary school experiences one afternoon a week for the entire academic year.   

We always welcome people who want to discuss routes into teaching – we might be biased but we believe there is no better job than teaching young people and shaping the next generation! All course pathways lead to the award of Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).

Our Postgraduate Teaching Apprenticeship route enables you to gain Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) whilst working here at Cardinal Newman College. During your training year, you will be employed and paid as an unqualified teacher by Cardinal Newman College.  

You will have a subject mentor, a general professional studies mentor and a subject studies mentor during your training year. 

The cost of training is covered by the apprenticeship levy funding so is free to the apprentice. You will gain Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) on successful competition of this course.  

You will be expected to teach whilst you train and must be confident in your capacity to be able to do this. 

You will be responsible for classes. 

Degree 

An undergraduate degree, or equivalent. 

Your degree subject should ideally be in the subject you are wishing to train to teach in, if you wish for further information please contact mholland@cardinalnewman.ac.uk.   

GCSE 

Grade 4 (C) or above in English Language and Maths, or equivalent qualification. 

Candidates with pending GCSEs will be considered and equivalency tests will be accepted in English Language or Maths. 

Candidates will need to book, sit and pass any equivalency exams before the course officially starts and our team are on hand to help and guide you through this process.

Josh - Computer Science

During my apprenticeship, I have gained valuable teaching experience from day one. With the support of my mentor and the teacher training team I felt confident to start leading activities and classes within the first week of starting the apprenticeship. Continuing to work in close collaboration with my mentor led to me feeling confident in my teaching ability. This worked in conjunction with weekly training that introduced me to new teaching techniques that I implemented within my teaching practice. Ultimately, the support provided by the college, my mentor, Michelle and all my colleagues who have offered advice over the last year helped me to effectively develop my teaching practice, leading to quick improvements. The culmination of this has led to the fantastic opportunity to continue teaching at Cardinal Newman College!

 

Sonya - Business Studies 

As a mum of 2, and as someone that was moving away from a more corporate career, the apprenticeship route was the best option for me - it allowed me to dive straight into a teaching career from day one and get a good idea of what I was walking into. The course was delivered by incredibly dedicated and experienced trainers who made training feel seamless and easy to put into practice. I got to train alongside exceptionally bright apprentices from different disciplines who I also learnt a lot from. We had guest speakers come in from different areas of education at different stages of training which helped broaden my understanding of teaching as a whole and I could take my career later on.

Being in the classroom, with pupils, teaching my subject from day one pushed me out of my comfort zone in the best possible way. While traditional teacher trainees around me were building their confidence and experience in the classroom slowly, apprentices like me were in classrooms from the onset, implementing learning live as we were taught it. As challenging as this was, it gave me an immeasurable sense of confidence very early on.

The apprenticeship consisted of key teaching theory, best practice evidence, practical classroom strategies along with real-world experience from the trainers and other educators. We trained every Wednesday which involved engaging in literature, reflecting on it and then implementing it in the classroom. We also had subject specific training every week to help tailor our learning to our own subjects. 

Michelle was dedicated and someone who I could contact easily, and who was always there to support us, not just in our training but to check in on us and make sure we were also taking our own well-being seriously. 

I am now a full time teacher of Business Studies and I owe this to being able to demonstrate my training and learnt skills so early on.

Trainees are well prepared through first-rate complementary placements which ensure that they gain substantial practical experience, developing their evaluative and practical teaching skills effectively. Expert mentors and subject trainers have consistently high expectations and work collaboratively to ensure training is coherent and highly relevant to the needs of trainees.
