School Direct at Cardinal Newman College
Here at Cardinal Newman College we are pleased to be leading a cluster of high schools in a School Direct Teaching Alliance.
The “on the job” training scheme is an alternative route into the traditional, largely university-based Post Graduate Certificate of Education course, and will see aspiring teachers placed in local schools. The scheme also breaks with convention by offering training across the 11-18 age range.
We will be working alongside Edge Hill University, which is one of the country’s leading teacher training institutions, and we are hoping to recruit initially among local scholars.
Principal Nick Burnham said the benefits to the college of being involved in School Direct were enormous, “The College and its partners are able to select and recruit our own trainees unlike on a conventional PGCE course when the university place the students in the school and college. Therefore we are looking to attract applicants with the academic rigour, drive and personality to be the next generation of outstanding teachers.
“For Newman and its partners we will be playing a part in not only training the next generation of outstanding teachers but also employing them, which should help safeguard the quality of teaching at the college and in its partner schools for years to come.”
Schools involved include Preston’s Archbishop Temple CE and Christ the King Catholic high schools, Penwortham Priory Academy and Holy Cross Catholic High in Chorley, as well as Lytham St Bede’s
John Pugh, Director of Quality & Curriculum added: “The benefits our trainees will receive from working with the staff from these schools alongside the expertise that Edge Hill and Newman will bring really should ensure the quality of training provided is second to none.’
