Paraylmpic Hopeful for Rio 2016

Newman student Isaac Towers is celebrating after coming second in the London mini marathon. It is the last 5k of the London Marathon and is completed by under 18s, as you must be over 18 to compete in the main marathon. Approximately 2000 able and para athletes take part, so coming in second place is a fantastic addition to his previous successes in this race, where he has placed in the top two, five times.

Although a fantastic achievement on its own, Isaac treats the marathon as a training exercise, as he is currently in training for European selection, and ultimately the Paralympic Games in Rio this summer.

Isaac’s event is the T34 800 meters and he will find out in July if he has made team GB. Isaac is currently ranked as UK No. 1 for the 400m, 800m and 1500m and is in the top 5 in the world. In order to be guaranteed a place in Rio he will need to be ranked within the world’s top 3, so there is no rest, as Isaac must continue training hard to ensure that he wins his place.

Rio would be the icing on the cake for what has already been a fantastic year for Isaac, who has competed in International events in Portugal and Italy, with further races in the UK, Switzerland, Northern and Republic of Ireland and Italy still to come.

Isaac is definitely a star in the making, so watch this space…
