Cambridge Gold for Chemistry Student!

With 6886 entries in the annual Cambridge Chemistry Challenge it is truly outstanding that a number of our Chemistry students at the College did exceptionally well!

The College first started entering students into the award back in 2011 and this year saw the highest achievement by our students to date. All eight students, Michael Antys (Our Lady’s), Shauntelle Austin (Broughton), Jan-Kay Cheung (Holy Cross), Rachel Jamieson (Broughton), Katie Mawdsley (Ashton), Joseph Meldrum (Leyland St Marys), Kate Nowell (All Hallows) and Diluki Rathugamage, who entered the competition were either awarded Gold or Copper.

Y13 student Michael Antys was in the top 8% of entrants who were awarded the Gold. Michael shall be applying to Oxford university to study Chemistry and was truly shocked with his result!
The Cambridge Chemistry Challenge is set up as part of chemistry enrichment at Newman and gives those who part take the chance to further their understanding in the field.

Head of Chemistry, Adam Patterson was elated saying “students enter themselves into this challenge voluntarily and I’m thrilled they have done so well this year! Never before have we seen such great results”

The Science department has achieved many accolades over the past year with 2014 seeing a record number of students continuing their studies at university in medicine, dentistry or veterinary science.
