Good Schools Guide Reviews Newman

In January we were delighted to open our doors and welcome The Good Schools Guide into our College.

The Good Schools Guide is an independent source of information on schools across the UK, which aims to help parents and carers make the best choice of education for their children. Established for over 30 years, they have continued to provide impartial and candid reviews of schools and colleges, only including the best institutions based on merit.

Representatives from the Good Schools Guide joined us for a full day, which was spent meeting with a range of staff members and students from all areas of the college to find out more about our beautiful institution.

After rigorous investigation of all things Newman, we are delighted to share their findings, which can be viewed in full here >> Cardinal Newman College Review | The Good Schools Guide

Reading through all their observations and findings, we couldn’t be more delighted. Talking about our care for students, the Good Schools Guide said:

“Given the vast number of students we feared pastoral care might be a challenge for the college. We could not be more wrong. One of the first things the principal told us with great pride is that he is not just committed to, but closely involved in, the welfare of students. The safeguarding leads report directly to him, and he will be involved in supporting students when things get difficult.”

They also commented on how well our teachers know and support their students: “Teaching staff told us that communication is key to them knowing their own students very well and being able to support them, ‘I certainly don’t know all 5000, nothing like it, but I know those I teach very well, we track and monitor not just their academics but their attendance and well-being. We work our hardest to make sure no one slips through the net.’”

But it is not just our teaching staff who are there to support our students: “The college has a team of five full time counsellors who have daily drop-in sessions as well as the opportunity for self-referrals by students and parents. There is also a 24/7 on-line platform to support students with emotional and mental health issues. All of this is housed in Saint Raphael’s, an impressive, newly built welfare centre which contains a large break out space, small rooms, accessible loo and everything you need to give students a safe space to escape to and be professionally supported.”

As I am sure you can see, we couldn’t be happier with the review and how they summed up the work that we endeavour to do here: “The opportunities available at Cardinal Newman College are very wide, from the highest academic challenge, to exciting and superbly resourced vocational courses and training for some of the most vulnerable. Yes, it's a big place, but don’t be put off by the size: pastoral care and the individuality of the student as well as high levels of achievement are at the heart of this warm and inviting college.”
