Standing up Against Hate

Standing up Against Hate

Cardinal Newman College is delighted to have hosted our fourth annual Law and Criminology Conference.

The conference, which took place on Thursday 16th October, featured guest speakers addressing students on a range of crime related topics. The theme for this year’s conference was hate crime, with all speakers approaching the issue from a variety of different angles, including those personally touched by hate crime and representatives from Lancashire Constabulary.

Guest speakers this year included Rt Hon Stuart Lawrence, brother of murdered teenager Stephen Lawrence, as well as Dr Gee Walker MBE, the mother of Anthony Walker who was also murdered in a violent attack when he was just 18 years old.

Other speakers included representatives from GALOP (an anti-abuse charity) and the Sophie Lancaster Foundation, both of whom talked about hate crime motivated by issues such as sexuality and transgender hate crime and hate crime against alternative groups.

All of the visitors spoke about their experiences to students from the Law and Criminology Departments, to strengthen their understanding of crime and deviance.

Last year, the College began a collaboration with the Anthony Walker Foundation, to raise funds and awareness of the dangers and impact that hate crimes pose to the community. As a College, we are championing a campaign, Newman Against Hate, to encourage our College to band together against all forms of hate and discrimination. We want our students and wider College community to be a shining example of the Anthony Walker Foundation’s Mission; a community living together in peace, harmony and integrity.
