Yorkshire Sculpture Park

After half term, Year 12 BTEC Art & Design students and Art Foundation students visited the Yorkshire Sculpture Park in Wakefield as part of their studies. The trip, which allowed the students to do the artists viewpoint tour, was aimed at supporting their current projects “My Surroundings” and “Art History” by allowing them to develop their own visual language and support the analysis of artists sculptures and settings in which the art forms are placed.

Situated in West Bretton in the parklands of Bretton Hall, the Yorkshire Sculpture Park is an open-air gallery which was opened in 1977. Dubbed the ‘gallery without walls’, it has a changing exhibition programme rather than the permanent displays that can be seen in other UK sculpture parks. Work by artists such as Henry Moore and Barbara Hepworth can be seen and the collection of works by Henry Moore is the largest open-air display of bronzes in Europe.

The group also got the chance to visit the underground indoor gallery space and explore the park, adding lots of sketches and notes to their sketch books for further work back at college.
