The aim of the entry level programme is to promote Personal and Social Development skills and strategies. It aims to progress independence and communication skills needed in everyday life and work. The programme offers work related experiences, in a managed and supported environment allowing you to start to gain an awareness of the world of work.
You will focus on Personal and Social Development and general employability skills building on areas such as Life skills, Community Action, Communication and Wellbeing. Modules will cover independence in the home and community, developing self, work exploration and work related experience, health and wellbeing, confidence and communication.
All students will undertake a literacy and numeracy assessment and work within the appropriate levels in order to progress. Accreditation will be pursued where appropriate.
You will be supported to explore options for transition which include Further Education programmes, employment, training and community access. Students leave equipped with the skills to make further choices around their future and progress onto meeting their aspirational goals.
In the past students have chosen to move onto specific vocational courses at Entry Level 3/L1 e.g. Childcare, Art, Design and Media and Animal Care. Some students have made a successful move to social enterprise opportunities such as Brothers of Charity, My Life and others have chosen to develop their independence in their community further by accessing social packages such as Caritas Care.
Students’ progress will be reviewed annually and a full transition programme will be offered to support their next steps after Cardinal Newman. They will have access to impartial careers advice and information and opportunities to link with other providers who form part of their transition plan. These can include further education and training, community programmes, independent and supported living, voluntary work, employment and supported employment.
Whilst students may study at Cardinal Newman College for two years, each young person’s progress will be assessed during their first year prior to a second year of study being offered.
Students must be working at Entry Level 1 or above and have a funded EHCP. Priority will be given to students aged 16-18 as we are a Sixth Form College. The course provided at Cardinal Newman must meet the needs of the student as recorded in their EHCP.
NB: The course is a 2 year programme of study which will be reviewed on an annual basis. Any continuation of a place will be dependent on progress made and that the place remains funded.
