By studying this course at Cardinal Newman, you will have access to industry standard equipment and specialist facilities within the St James’s purpose built Art & Design studios.

The BTEC is a vocational course, which means that all major project briefs will aim to better prepare you for what will happen in a creative work environment. The two-year course comprises of mandatory and optional units, which allow you to build up a portfolio of Art and Design work to a professional standard. You will not only develop your creativity but you will also learn about how artists and designers work in industry.

What Will You Study?

You will develop skills in a broad range of disciplines within art, craft and design. Upon completion, this course is the UCAS point equivalent to three A Levels.

Throughout the BTEC course, you will study a variety of units where you will develop a wide range of transferable skills, such as drawing, painting, printmaking, embroidery, photography, 3D design, graphic work using Apple Mac software, illustration, ceramics and additional specialist techniques to challenge your learning. The final unit of the course is a Final Major Project in which you will work in your specialist discipline.

The programme is all coursework based. You will be formally assessed throughout the course and receive feedback during and at the end of each assignment. You will always know what you have achieved and how to improve. You will follow summative assessments for each unit when you have the knowledge, skills and experience, which contribute to the final grades.
