What is BTEC Travel and Tourism?

A Travel and Tourism BTEC qualification tells potential employers what well-developed skills/attributes you have. For example, research skills, excellent time management, that you are able to work in a team, and that you have the necessary ‘people’ skills to manage others effectively.

You will develop a range of skills required for a managerial career through a range of varied and interesting projects, tailored to match your interests and ambitions.

You will also have the opportunity to complete a relevant work placement, to use your newly acquired skills in an industry setting. A variety of trips will also be organised for you to see the industry in action.

What Will You Study?

Some of the topics we cover are:

  • Destinations in the UK, in Europe and worldwide – what makes destinations appealing to travellers?
  • The Business of Tourism – from marketing to meeting the needs of customers and on to how to run a successful business in this industry.
  • Current Trends in the industry – from the demise of Thomas Cook to the environmental impact of our holidays.
  • In particular, we look at sustainable tourism and consider how the industry can meet current expectations regarding its environmental impact.
  • Working in the T&T industry – what roles are available, and how to get the ideal job for you.

What Next?

As well as careers as Cabin Crew and Holiday Reps, Travel and Tourism can lead to a wide range of other careers in the areas of event & hospitality management, wedding planning, travel agencies, public relations, travel journalism and tourism marketing.
