What is NHS Careers Plus?

NHS Careers Plus is a bespoke course for those interested in working with people of a variety of ages in a hospital setting. You will be studying the Extended Diploma in Health and Social Care, alongside a two-day placement. We will be working closely with Preston & Chorley NHS trusts to provide placements two days a week. This is a unique opportunity to work closely with health professionals and a range of client groups, from babies or children, to people with special needs or learning difficulties, to families and young people, to the elderly. If you have an approachable, trustworthy, enthusiastic and compassionate nature, this course may be for you!

Throughout the course teaching, learning and assessment is applied to health and social care practice and the range of client groups and situations where care and support take place.

What Will You Study?

As part of the course you will study a range of core units and additional units. Core units include Human Lifespan Development, Working in Health and Social Care, Enquiries into Current Research in Health and Social Care, Anatomy and Physiology, Meeting Individual Care and Support Needs, Principles of Safe Practice in Health and Social Care and Promoting Public Health.

What Next?

Studying the Extended Diploma in Health and Social Care (NHS Careers Plus) will enable you to progress into Higher Education to pursue many different careers including Adult, Children or Mental Health Nursing, Radiography, Social Work, Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, Public Health Degrees, Midwifery and many more! Alternatively you may choose to progress into a related apprenticeship or training position, or study another subject at degree level.

Entry Requirements

You will need to achieve a minimum of two 5s and three 4s at GCSE, including at least a grade 4 in Maths. You will be required to complete a Disclosure and Barring Service criminal background check. You will be required to provide references. Places on this course are limited and entry to this course will be subject to an interview with a member of the Health & Social Care staff at Cardinal Newman College and a staff member from the NHS Lancashire Teaching Hospitals.

BTEC Extended Diploma, this is equivalent to 3 A-Levels

What other subjects go well with this subject?

Due to this course being three days a week with placement two days a week you wouldn’t combine this course with another subject.
