What is BTEC Music Performance?

A Music Performance BTEC is a well-rounded programme of study. It prepares you for many aspects of work within the music industry. It is the equivalent of 1 A-Level and you will focus on Performance, Composition, Musicianship and Professional Practice.

What Will You Study?

  • Music Performance Techniques – a solo recital and ensemble performance measuring performance ability which should be between Grade 3 – 5 in standard.
  • Music Session Styles – ensemble performances in a range of different situations such as open mic, recording sessions, formal concerts, theatre work etc. The stylistic approach is measured along with performance accuracy and adaptability.
  • The Music Freelance World – creating marketing materials and CV in order to develop individual professional presence. Understanding the professional roles within the industry and how to undertake self-development to achieve professional status
  • Composing Music – Devising and developing a range of ideas from initial melodies and chords through to fully finished pieces of music.
  • Pop Music in Practice – Listening to and analysing Popular Music styles then composing original pop-influenced pieces in groups and creating cover versions in new styles.
  • Working and Developing as a Musical Ensemble – Understanding the development of a successful ensemble and working in groups to become a well-rehearsed professional outfit worthy of professional engagements.

What Next?

Studying BTEC Music can lead you into an exciting and creative career in the music and media industries. The skills that you will develop are essential for working as a Performer, Composer or Producer, in a recording studio, in Radio and in theatres and live music venues. There is a wide range of vocational and Higher Education courses available in this subject area.

Entry Requirements for Music Performance BTEC

At least five 4s at GCSE and at least a 4 in Music (if studied) and a 4 in English Language or Maths.
Students who enrol on this course must be able to play at least one instrument to a competent level. For more detail please contact the Music Department.

Course Type

BTEC Extended Certificate, this is equivalent to 1 A-Level.
