Applied Law BTEC

What is BTEC Applied Law?

The Applied Law BTEC will take on a more practical approach to studying Law and gain an understanding of the work and skills involved in legal careers, such as Legal Executives and Paralegals.

What Will You Study?

Year 12 Topics:

• Dispute Solving in civil law: structure of the civil courts, alternative dispute resolution, sources of advice and funding in civil cases, judicial precedent, the law of negligence (duty of care, breach of duty and damage); how damages are calculated, contributory negligence. This unit is externally assessed
• Investigating Aspects of the Criminal Law and the Legal System: parliamentary law making, influences on Parliament, statutory interpretation, delegated legislation, European legislative process, legal personnel (the legal profession, the judiciary, magistrates and juries), funding a criminal case, elements of a crime, sentencing and non-fatal offences. This unit is internally assessed

Year 13 Topics:

• Applying the Law: police powers of stop and search, arrest and detention, murder, voluntary manslaughter, involuntary manslaughter, theft, robbery, burglary, criminal damage, fraud and general defences. This unit is externally assessed.
• Aspects of Family Law: law relating to legal marriage, cohabitation, divorce and maintenance. This unit is internally assessed

What Next?

Studying BTEC Law will equip you with skills that are highly regarded in the field of Law. Such as research skills, time management skills, the ability to work as a team and to work independently within deadlines.

Students with BTEC Applied Law have a number of options available. This qualification can be considered together with other BTECs/A-Levels to enable students to progress to university. Many students also consider apprenticeships and employment in law-related positions.
