On the Art and Design BTEC, you will gain knowledge and understanding of visual communication and the creative process. You will study the work of other artists and designers to inspire and inform your work. You will build up a practical portfolio of work to support progression to higher education, by exploring and developing a wide range of Art & Design skills.
This is a vocational course, which means that all major project briefs will aim to better prepare you for what to expect in a creative work environment. You will work with a diverse range of materials, techniques & processes within Art & Design. Working through the creative cycle to research, explore, experiment, and develop ideas working towards a resolved outcome is key.

After successful completion of the course, many of our students choose to stay at Cardinal Newman to complete a one-year UAL Foundation Diploma in Art & Design, before progressing on to prestigious Art & Design degree courses.
Recent progression has included Interior Design, Falmouth University / Jewellery & Silversmithing, University of Edinburgh / Graphic Design UAL, As well as Fine Art at Lancaster University, Illustration at the University of Edinburgh. Animation at Salford University, Interior Design and 3D Design at MMU.
Pearson BTEC Edexcel
At least five 4s at GCSE, including at least a 4 in GCSE Art and English Language or Maths. Creative GCSE Design Technology subjects including Textiles, Graphic Design and Resistant Materials may be considered. Progression to the course via this route will be subject to an interview with a portfolio of artwork.
BTEC Extended Diploma, this is equivalent to 3 A-Levels.
Studying an Art & Design BTEC Extended Diploma is equivalent to three A-Levels, so it is a full programme of study and we would not advise combining this with any additional subjects.
