What is the English Combined A-Level?

A-Level English Language and Literature allows you to study language and the way in which we use it. English Combined A-Level will also develop your writing skills, as well as studying a range of novels, poems, Shakespeare, post-1900 drama, and classic non-literary texts.

The English Language and Literature A Level is an engaging course which will allow you to develop and broaden your interest in and enjoyment of all aspects of English.

You will get the unique opportunity to study a diverse range of drama, poetry, and prose across a plethora of genres as well as perfecting your own creative writing skills; learning how to write like accomplished novelists and investigative journalists. You will spend time examining and discussing which authorial techniques go into creating infamous and timeless classics.

You will also learn how to analyse and appreciate writing techniques, developing a sophisticated understanding of how writers evoke powerful emotions in readers such as fear, sorrow and pity using only the written word.

You will also get the chance to explore the psychology behind the English language, discovering the subconscious rules that govern our everyday conversations.

What Next?

A-level English Language and Literature is a core subject. Therefore, skills develop to give students opportunities to move forward into a range of areas. Additionally, many students go onto study the subject in its various forms at university, including English Literature, English Language, Combined English, Linguistics, Journalism and Creative Writing.

At least five 5s at GCSE, including at least a 6 in GCSE English Language or English Literature and a 5 in the other.

Have you considered studying a Mixed Programme (A-Levels and Btecs) Whether you’re on target to achieve five 5s in your GCSEs or not there may still be an option to study A-Levels alongside a BTEC qualification at Newman.
