Core Maths

What is Core Maths?

Objectives of the course include developing confidence in representing and analysing authentic situations mathematically, in addition to building skills in mathematical thinking, reasoning and communication.
There is a growing demand for employees with good mathematical understanding, so by studying Core Maths you will be able to boost your skillset, helping you to prepare you for your future career.

What Will You Study?

Core Maths covers a breadth of mathematics content quite different to that at GCSE. We study a blend of financial calculations, such as payslip deductions and repaying mortgages as well as specific maths, to support the numerical content in the other courses you will study at College. There are two strands of Core Maths, which means the content will be tailored to better suit the programme of study you have chosen at Newman.

What Next?

Core Maths is a qualification worth the same UCAS points as an AS-Level, so success in Core Maths could really benefit your application to university. With the level of mathematics being more advanced than GCSE Maths, employers and University Admissions will look favourably on an application that has a Level 3 Maths qualification.
