Kangaroo Award for top Mathematicians

Each year Cardinal Newman College enters the UKMT Senior Maths Challenge, which sees us competing with around 2000 other institutions from around the world! This year 90 of our Maths students took part and achieved the best results yet!

The Senior Maths Challenge is aimed at all 16 – 19 year olds studying Mathematics. It involves answering 25 multiple choice questions in 90 minutes and takes place in College under normal exam conditions.

Two of our students, Owen Futter (St Bede’s, Lytham) and Abdullah Khawaja (Our Lady’s, Fulwood) did exceptionally well, achieving the Senior Kangaroo award, which is an award higher than gold! 31% of our students who entered achieved either a Gold or Silver award.

As the challenge is open to schools and colleges all over the world, our students were competing against students from countries such as Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, Vietnam and China. They were also competing against, and beating, students who are currently studying at Eton, Westminster School and Winchester College.

All students involved were award a certificate to mark their achievement, which were awarded by the College Principal, Nick Burnham, along with an extra treat of an Easter egg!
