The Newman Teaching Alliance

The Newman Teaching Alliance offers School Direct training, leading to the award of a secondary PGCE with QTS and the opportunity to gain credits towards a master’s degree.

The Newman Teaching Alliance gives all trainees the opportunity to have a placement at a partner High School focusing on 11-16 provision, but they will also have one placement at Newman College itself focusing on 16-18 delivery. This will offer great advantages in terms of employability as the trainees will be genuinely trained across the 11-18 age range, which will mean that they will be very strong candidates for jobs across the 11-16, 11-18 and 16-18 sectors. We believe that the outstanding reputation of Cardinal Newman College, along with our partner schools, is another benefit of the Alliance and can only improve the employment chances of our trainees; but equally importantly will ensure the highest quality training provided by outstanding teachers and managers from Newman and its partners.

The Newman Teaching Alliance will be in partnership with Edge Hill University, one of the country’s leading providers of teacher training. Edge Hill has built an outstanding reputation over a 130-year history of providing high-quality teacher education and the Newman Alliance is thrilled to be working with the North West’s premier ITT provider in what is their biggest School Direct partnership in Lancashire.

Cardinal Newman College, the lead school in the alliance, is one of the top performing sixth form colleges in England, renowned for its outstanding results across many years. It has just been ranked as the second top performing college in the whole of England based on A-level progress (value added). Newman is currently the only sixth form college in Lancashire to be significantly growing in size, which is a testament to its reputation with local secondary schools and their students.

At Newman College we pride ourselves on supporting students in their progression into careers and further education. This is reflected in the fact that the College recently became a hub for Cambridge University’s HE+ project – an initiative to help students into the most prestigious universities in the country. The Newman Alliance, working with Edge Hill University, makes the same commitment to our prospective PGCE students and is committed to helping train the next generation of outstanding teachers and finding them local employment.

Cardinal Newman College is blessed with state of the art facilities set in stunning grounds. The college is located in the very heart of the city of Preston just a few minutes walk from the city centre, the bus station and the train station.
