Central to our mission and ethos is the belief that you should not only be inspired by excellent teaching and achieve academic success, but we also strongly believe that you should expect a comprehensive range of enrichment designed to develop you as an individual. Newman is not just about achieving excellent exam results; it is also about gaining valuable life experience!

Each subject you study will offer you the chance to explore different destinations to put your studies into context; from New York to LA, Russia to Poland, Iceland to Switzerland. If you study one of the three languages you will have the opportunity to take part in an exchange and explore different areas of the country you are studying.

At the start of every year the College holds a Freshers’ Fair which is the perfect opportunity for both new and returning students to sign up to many different clubs, societies and charities to help make the most of their time at Newman. Students can volunteer for Fairtrade, Cafod and the Soup Kitchen or join many of the clubs on offer ranging from Maths Cipher Club to the Writing Group; Big Band to Dr Who.

Below is a list of just some of the clubs, societies and annual trips you can expect to be involved in when studying at Cardinal Newman:

Geography Trip to Iceland

New for 2015, if you choose to take Geography you could get the chance to go on a field trip to Iceland to view its tectonic and coastal features. Possible excursions could include a trip to the Blue Lagoon, Thingvellir and Landmannalaugar.


Our Academies are open to all students (regardless of studies) who are particularly passionate about dance, netball, football or basketball and wish to challenge themselves at a competitive level. To be part of any of the academies you will be asked to audition or take part in trials soon after your college interview.

New York, New York!

Students from Drama, Dance, Performing Arts and Travel & Tourism get an exciting opportunity to take part in a trip to New York City. Previously students have enjoyed watching Broadway shows and exploring the amazing sights of the city including the Empire State Building.

LA with Film and Media Studies

If you take either of these exciting subjects you will get the chance take a trip to LA to visit the many famous areas of Hollywood. The trip also gives students the chance to take part in cinematography workshops at world renowned studios such as Sony, Warner Bros. and Universal.

Ancient History trip to Greece

If you decide to study Ancient History at Newman you can enjoy a trip to Athens as part of your studies on Ancient Greek society! History enthusiasts will have the chance to visit Hadrian’s Arch, The Temple of Zeus and the Acropolis.

Cafod Group

If you like to help organize exciting events and raise money for charity, our College Cafod Group may be worth signing up to. Recently the group has ran the Manchester 10k run, been to Cafod HQ in London and supported the ‘Thirst for Change’ campaign by appealing directly to David Cameron using their video and writing skills. Chemistry Club

If you are studying sciences and want to know more why not give the College Chemistry Club a try – you can enjoy numerous competitions throughout the year including ‘Molecules in Motion’.

Dr Who Group

The ultimate enrichment group for any dedicated Whovians; the Doctor Who Club runs every other week and will give you the opportunity to discuss and watch episodes of the famous TV show past and present. You will also have the opportunity to visit the Doctor Who Experience and the Film & Comic Convention in London!

Film Academy

Fancy yourself as the next Christopher Nolan? The Film Academy will give you hands on experience in planning and creating a short film or documentary. Your final project will be put on a DVD and screened before an audience in College!

Language Exchanges

If you’re studying any one of the three languages we offer at Cardinal Newman, you will have the opportunity to visit the respective country as part of an exchange. Find out more about last year’s German exchange at

Law trip to London

If you choose to study Law at Newman you will have the opportunity to visit London to observe cases in the Old Bailey, Court of Appeal and Supreme Court. Further to this you will also be able to visit Parliament to see where laws are made.

Maths Code Club

Have a love for numbers? Join our Maths Code Club for the chance to be involved in the National Cipher Challenge run through Southampton University.

Medical Society

Aimed at students who have expressed a wish to study Medicine, Veterinary Science or Dentistry at University the Medical Society will prepare you for your UCAS application and equip you with stand-out skills for your university interview. You will also enjoy taster sessions focused around current medical topics and have the opportunity to visit several different universities.

Music Enrichment

From the College Big Band, Concert Band, String Orchestra to the popular Choir there is plenty on offer for any musical students at Newman! You will have the opportunity to perform throughout the College year at different events and if you join the choir you will have the chance to travel Europe for various competitions.

Newman Magazine

Are you a budding journalist? Join our group of student writers and help to produce the Newman Magazine. You can also sign up to the College Writing Group to improve and explore your literary talents!

Oxbridge Group

If you are interested in applying to Oxbridge or any other prestigious institution you can be assured that you will receive plenty of support and advice whilst studying at Newman. In our Oxbridge Group we aim to guide you through the application process and organise lunchtime sessions on how to write a good personal statement, improve study skills and interview preparation.

Performance at Newman

If you’re a keen performer you will be spoilt for choice with performance enrichment at Newman. Newman Players is our working theatre company for any budding actors/actresses, whilst the Theatre Appreciation Society will give you to the chance to watch and discuss current (and past) performances within the theatre. There are also ballet and extra dance classes available and don’t forget the Dance Academy.

Physics trip to Geneva

Each year Physics students travel to Geneva to visit CERN, the European Organisation for Nuclear Science. Highlights include a visit to the Microcosm Museum before the main site at CERN plus a boat ride across Lake Geneva!

RS & German go to Berlin

As part of your studies in RS & German you will have the opportunity to visit the Jewish Quater & Holocaust Memorial; the Villa at Wannsee, where The Final Solution was planned; the remains of the Berlin Wall and the prison used by the infamous Stasi Secret Police.

Sports Enrichment

If you wish to pursue a sport at a recreational level rather than through one of our academies, the opportunities are endless.

Teams include: girls football, squash, badminton, table tennis, rugby, tennis, plus our popular netball, basketball and football recreational teams. Students have also been involved in trampolining, golf and swimming events. Whatever your sporting talent we aim to support you.

Student Union

The Student Union is a group selected by current students to act as a link between the College staff and students. They have representatives on the College’s governing body and work closely with senior management to generate new ideas, evaluate facilities and discuss students’ views, which ensures that the student body is represented.
